Stop eating palm oil or you are part of the problem.

9/1/2016

There's really no assurance that a company that says they are using sustainable palm oil is actually doing so. Even if a palm oil company is legally bound by laws to act sustainably, there's nothing in place to rigorously uphold the law (whether it's in Indonesia, South America, Africa, or in the U.S.).. And there really is no place that a palm oil plantation is actually sustainable - at least not that I've ever seen. Nutella's parent company uses palm oil certified by RSPO which there are questions about their green certification process (see here - http://bit.ly/1R4nVYl). They will say it is, but it isn't. Unfortunately, if you're eating palm oil in products in the U.S., it's sourced from Malaysia (90%). The problem is only going to get worse now that trans fats are going to be banned from the U.S., and companies will look for an alternative - palm oil. So I would still suggest avoiding it if possible, or make it yourself (see below).
